2003 has been designated the United Nations International Year of Fresh Water, and with many parts of Australia in the grip of severe drought, on-going issues of rising salinity and pollution, there is lots of scope for real and relevant learning around this topic. March 22 is World Water Day and the theme for 2003 is Water For the Future. For schools working with the Essential Learning Framework, this topic should provide lots of scope.

EdNA have collected together a wealth of really useful web links around the theme, and they can be found at: http://www.edna.edu.au/schools/themes/water.html

WebQuests in Tasmania

In June this year Tom March (a world leader in the development of learning activities using web resources) visited Tasmania to work with some teachers and staff at e- magine.
Since that time, teachers have participated in workshops around the state to develop WebQuests that are suitable for Tasmanian students and which are based around the Essential Learnings. The WebQuests and other web-based learning activities from these workshops form a very useful collection of resources for teachers to use with their students and can be found at:

World Animal Welfare Day, 4 October
http://www.edna.edu.au/noticeboards/noticeread.html?nbid=1981&nid=2497
Part of World Wildlife Week

World Wildlife Week, 1-7 October
http://www.edna.edu.au/noticeboards/noticeread.html?nbid=1981&nid=2495
This week aims to raise awareness of the importance of preserving our wildlife and the habitats, such as rainforests, wetlands, grasslands, and shorelines. Science shows us that species are dying out at an unprecedented rate. Human population growth, resource consumption and waste threaten to cause increases in extinction rates and irreparable harm to ecosystems. Cities, suburbs and rural areas are more than social communities in which human beings live and grow. They are also part of natural communities in which we share space with a variety of wild birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, fish, invertebrates, and plants. Wild things are as much a part of our world as we are.

Zootober - International Zoo Month - October
http://www.edna.edu.au/noticeboards/noticeread.html?nbid=1981&nid=2695M
Zoo Month or 'Zootober', held each year in October, provides an opportunity for zoos to promote particular features of their animal collections and also to provide the community with access to information about animals, their environments, and the challenge of maintaining zoos.

On 7 September 2001, the United Nations General Assembly decided that from 2002, the International Day of Peace would be observed on 21 September each year, with this date to be brought to the attention of all people for the celebration and observance of peace (resolution 55/282).

It declared that:
"the Day shall henceforth be observed as a day of global ceasefire and non-violence, an invitation to all nations and people to honour a cessation of hostilities throughout the Day".

Teacher Surveys

As readers and writes, children need:

These core goals are relevant to Word Study in any level of study. Many of them have been mentioned already in this discussion. But importantly in relation to Andy's comments these goals need to become relevant to all high school teachers and not just the domain of the English teacher. All subjects use high frequency words and also have content words specific to the subject - how do teachers support students to learn these words in all curriculum areas?

Carol mentioned the importance of lists of words in a child's workspace, currently many teachers are exploring the use of interactive word walls. That is word walls with high frequency words which students have access to whilst writing. However to ensure that the words are familiar to the students word wall activities and games form an integral part of the program. For ideas on ways of using word walls see www.teachnet.com/lesson/langarts/wordwall062599.html and http://www.discover.tased.edu.au/english/implementing.htm#walls

WebQuests

This presentation sets a vision for the World Wide Web’s impact on learning.  It raises questions about how educators and schools serve the needs of learners and presents a comprehensive strategy for effectively ‘working the Web’ for education; that of the WebQuest.

A WebQuest is an inquiry activity that presents student groups with a challenging task, provides access to an abundance of usually online resources and scaffolds the learning process to prompt higher order thinking. The products of WebQuests are usually then put out to the world for some real feedback.

Here are some examples of WebQuests:

What is a family? (early childhood example)

For those people who need to teach kids how to use Microsoft software
products, Microsoft's very own website has some simple free lessons
which cover things you often do with their products: for example, using
shortcuts, using files and folders, using multiple-sheet Excel
workbooks, working with Word tables, using Outlook address books,
getting hit by every virus known to mankind (OK maybe not that one) and
selecting text. These seem to rotate so you have to visit regularly to
"collect the whole set".

For reasons best known to Microsoft, this is called their Insider
Learning centre. It lives at http://www.microsoft.com/insider/learning/
and requires shockwave plugins for most things. It has a spoken
narrative that might make you want to consider headphones if using it in
a classroom.

ANTARCTICA

http://www.secretsoftheice.org/

If you've been berating yourself for not yet visiting Antarctica, don't think you're the only one: fewer than 100,000 people have ever set foot on the continent. This site takes you on a cheaper and safer—albeit slightly less spectacular—desktop journey through the continent that's 98 percent covered in ice and snow. You'll learn about the history of its exploration and settlement, watch time-lapse images showing seasonal variations in surrounding sea ice, and discover its geological and climatological past. Funded in part by the National Science Foundation, the site also presents information on glaciologists who study the continent by gathering and dissecting various ice cores, which hold the secrets to Antarctica's past and future.
Use the site with students in conjunction with the Open IT module The Circle, available free at:
